500 Years of Brazil : rare works related to the discovery of Brazil

The virtual exposition is a result of a partnership with Brazilian Institutions at the time of the commemoration of 500 years of Brazil. The importance and goals of this documentation are very clear and significant in a national and international context. The scope, format, and digitalization process are kept the integrity of the document without critical transformation, and respecting intellectual property rights; therefore, without limitations related to its use and accessibility.
As far as the historical and rare aspect of the contents, the project has a sustainable characteristic that validates the principles of the digital library.
Collection Principles ��� Selection
This is a collection of 29 rare books, part of the digital collection ranging from 1585 to 1932. The digitalization of the objects supports the use and transformation of the formats; which allows the object to be exchangeable and broadly accessible.
The excellent physical quality of the materials were preserved thoroughly the digitalization process, and the integrity of the documents after the transformation is clear.
Object characteristics
The images are available in a large format, but are downloadable and will maintain their quality for reusability.
The protocol is hyper Text Transfer Protocol. The images are available in JPEG format, in a size of 77203 bytes. Dimensions are 536 X 822 pixels. The viewer cannot zoom in.
Metadata
Objects in the collection contain an excellent descriptive format. Descriptive summary include: title, date of publication, place, and other commentary concerning to the document related orienting users about what expect from the document in an appropriate language.
Intended Audience
As in any digitalization process, the audience intent (or should intend the Universal Access) to be as broadly as possible, but many times the accessibility become a challenge in the sense that its audience is very limited. The audience in this case is pretty much limited to a community of researchers/students; and historians focused on Brazilian Studies, but the value of the contents available make the digitalization process worthwhile, and its use by scholars likely.
