Selection Decisions
In its virtual museum, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) provides thematic exhibits about the history of electricity, its application, and its role in society. However, what constitutes an exhibit is an informative essay on a topic (eg. ���Socket it to Me!: How Electricity Came to Be���) with relevant images, short videos and interactive flash objects enhancing the essay���s content. The essays organize scientific information for the lay reader; the images, videos and flash objects help to make the information more accessible.
Metadata
Each image and video has a brief description and the details provided range in degree. Most notably not all descriptions recognize ownership of the image.
Object Characteristics
Most of the images are very intriguing, but often their size negatively impacts them. In fact, often the small size and inability to interact with them make details of the images illegible. While the videos are not larger, they tend to focus on an individual and not devices composed of many parts. The flash animations are fun and reminiscent of what an energetic high school science teacher would draw; they are clear as they simplify ideas.
Intended Audience
The content and perspective of the essays, which are the bulk of the site, make it hard to imagine any audience other than the general would use this site. Perhaps middle school and high school science classes could reference it as an introduction to certain topics.
