John Muir is considered the forefather of the modern environmental movement. Approximately 75% of the extant papers of Muir are housed at the Holt-Atherton Special Collections at the University of the Pacific. A selection of those have been digitized and are in the online exhibit.
Selection Principles
The online exhibit contains a selection of Muir's journals, drawings and sketches, and photograph collection. There are many more items that exist in the library but are not represented online. The exhibit does not offer any rationale for why the objects that appear online were chosen. Other kinds of items that did not make it online but are in the physical collection are correspondence, manuscripts of published and unpublished works, maps, scrapbooks, memorabilia, and miscellaneous papers.
Object Characteristics
The collections are in a CONTENTdm system. Each image can be magnified, rotated, and put in a new window. The collection is searchable, and you can select objects to add to favorites.
Metadata
Each object has a title, description, creator, subject, original date, digital date, format (jpg), rights management, publisher, type, language, relation, contributing institution, and source information.

The general public, people interesting in Muir, people interested in the special collections at the University of the Pacific.
