Selection Decisions
The Exhibitions Program at the CDS complement Center’s goal to serve “as a community forum for documentary work.” It displays documentary objects in various formats, in order to engage a broad community in discussions about history and culture. Moreover, the CDS invites suggestions from the community for new exhibits.
Metadata
Each image appears with a brief description and date of creation. An interpretive essay accompanies each group of images within an exhibit. There was little information about the files themselves, except for the site’s suggestions for optimizing viewing with Flash.
Object Characteristics
The site presented about five images for each exhibit. These were high quality images—mostly black and white. However, one could not zoom in on any image.
Intended Audience
The site provided excellent images with high quality interpretive narratives. However, the site did not present all images for an exhibit, nor did it allow for serious scrutiny of the provided images. Therefore, the site cannot serve the researcher; perhaps, the virtual representation will be enough to attract the researcher to the physical galleries. I believe the site would satisfy the casual viewer and enthusiast of the “other’s” everyday..
